aiglet

Shoelace metal end

An aiglet, more commonly spelled aglet, is the small plastic or metal sheath that covers the end of a shoelace or cord, preventing it from fraying and making it easier to thread through eyelets.

The term can also refer to decorative metal tips on the ends of ribbons or cords, particularly on historical garments.

I need to replace my shoelace—the aiglet came off and now it's unraveling.
