acre-foot

Water volume measure

An acre-foot is a unit of volume used to measure large quantities of water, equal to the amount needed to cover one acre to a depth of one foot—about 326,000 gallons.

The term appears most often in discussions of irrigation, reservoir capacity, and water rights in the American West: The reservoir holds 850,000 acre-feet.
