Commencement ceremony hat
A academic cap is a flat square board attached to a skullcap, worn at graduation ceremonies and other formal academic occasions.
The mortarboard—named for its resemblance to a mason's tool—sits level on the head with a tassel hanging from the center.
Graduates traditionally move the tassel from one side to the other upon receiving their degree: She flipped her academic cap's tassel to the left.
