absentmindedness
Forgetting where keys are
Absentmindedness is the state of being so lost in thought or preoccupied that you fail to notice what's happening around you or forget simple tasks.
It suggests mental presence elsewhere rather than stupidity: His absentmindedness made him leave the house with mismatched shoes.
The condition is often associated with intellectuals and professors absorbed in their work.
