Viking longhouse

Scandinavian communal dwelling

A Viking longhouse was the primary dwelling of Norse peoples during the Viking Age, a long, narrow building with a timber frame and walls of turf, stone, or wattle and daub.

These structures housed extended families along with their livestock, with a central hearth providing heat and light.

The design varied by region but typically featured a single large room: Archaeological excavations revealed a longhouse over thirty meters in length.
