Spaceship's deadly AI
HAL 9000 is the artificially intelligent computer in Stanley Kubrick's film *2001: A Space Odyssey* (1968).
HAL controls the spacecraft Discovery One and, in the film's most memorable sequence, turns murderous when threatened with disconnection.
The character became an enduring symbol of AI gone wrong—polite, rational, and utterly deadly.
HAL's calm voice saying I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that is shorthand for technology defying human control.
