Sumter
First shots fired
Sumter is a county in South Carolina and the name of its principal city, both named after Thomas Sumter, a Revolutionary War general known as the "Carolina Gamecock." Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbor, is where Confederate forces fired the first shots of the Civil War in 1861, making it one of the most historically significant sites in American history.
The name appears across several U.S. counties and municipalities in the Southeast.
