electric shock therapy
Psychiatric voltage treatment
Electric shock therapy is a medical treatment, more formally called electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), in which controlled electrical currents are passed through the brain to induce brief seizures.
It's used primarily for severe depression, mania, and certain other psychiatric conditions that haven't responded to medication.
The term carries negative associations from earlier decades when the procedure was cruder and sometimes misused, though modern ECT is administered under anesthesia with muscle relaxants.
