silverplate

Thin metallic veneer

Silverplate is tableware or other objects coated with a thin layer of silver over a base metal, usually copper or nickel.

It offers the appearance of solid silver at lower cost: The candlesticks looked elegant but were only silverplate.

As a verb, to silverplate is to coat an object with silver through electroplating or other methods.
