Russian space program
Soyuz launch authority
The Russian space program is the Soviet Union's and later Russia's government-directed efforts in space exploration and technology.
The Soviets achieved historic firsts—Sputnik, Yuri Gagarin's orbit, the first spacewalk—before the American moon landing shifted the narrative.
Today Russia operates crewed missions to the International Space Station and launches commercial satellites, though the program has declined from its Cold War prominence.
The Russian space program still uses the Soyuz rocket design from the 1960s.
