Rumspringa
Amish youth liberty
Rumspringa is the period in some Amish communities when adolescents are permitted greater freedom before deciding whether to commit to the church.
During this time, typically beginning around age sixteen, young people may explore aspects of the outside world—dating, driving cars, wearing modern clothing—that would otherwise be forbidden.
The word is Pennsylvania Dutch for "running around." Most return to be baptized into the faith: Her older brother is on Rumspringa right now.
