RICO

Organized crime statute

RICO is the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, a 1970 U.S. federal law designed to combat organized crime.

It allows prosecution of leaders who order crimes, not just those who commit them, and permits civil lawsuits against criminal enterprises.

A RICO case or RICO charge targets patterns of racketeering activity: The mob boss was convicted under RICO. (Capitalized Rico is a given name.)
