Pinkerton
Historic detective agency
A Pinkerton is a private detective or security agent, from the Pinkerton National Detective Agency founded in 1850.
The agency gained fame protecting Abraham Lincoln and hunting outlaws, but notoriety for violent strikebreaking in the late 19th century.
The name became shorthand for hired muscle or corporate enforcers: The company brought in Pinkertons to intimidate the workers.
Today it suggests private security with a mercenary edge.
