Pavlovian response
Trained automatic reaction
A Pavlovian response is an automatic reaction triggered by association rather than the stimulus itself—named for Ivan Pavlov, who conditioned dogs to salivate at a bell that signaled food.
The term now describes any reflexive, unthinking response to a stimulus: The mention of her ex's name produced a Pavlovian response of anxiety.
Also called a conditioned response.
