Ninth Symphony
Ode to Joy
A ninth symphony is any composer's ninth major work in symphonic form, but the phrase most often refers to Beethoven's final symphony, completed in 1824.
Its choral finale, setting Schiller's "Ode to Joy," made it revolutionary—the first major symphony to include voices.
The "Ode to Joy" melody has become a universal symbol of human brotherhood and celebration: They played the Ninth at the fall of the Berlin Wall.
