Niña

Sailed with Columbus

Niña is Spanish for girl, the feminine counterpart of niño.

In English contexts, it appears most often in the climate term La Niña, the cooling phase of Pacific Ocean temperatures that affects global weather patterns—the complement to El Niño.

The word also names one of Columbus's three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María.
