Na+/K+-ATPase

Cellular ion exchanger

Na+/K+-ATPase is an enzyme embedded in cell membranes that pumps sodium ions out of cells while pulling potassium ions in, using energy from ATP.

This exchange maintains the electrochemical gradient essential for nerve impulses, muscle contractions, and cellular volume regulation.

Also called the sodium-potassium pump.

The cardiac drug digoxin works by inhibiting Na+/K+-ATPase.
