Muscle Beach is a section of beach in Southern California famous for outdoor bodybuilding and fitness culture.
The original site in Santa Monica became a gathering place for weightlifters and acrobats in the 1930s and 40s; a later Venice Beach location continued the tradition.
The name now evokes sun-bronzed bodybuilders lifting weights by the ocean, and extends to any beach area where fitness enthusiasts congregate: It's like Muscle Beach out there on summer weekends.
