Morlock

Subterranean humanoid hunter

Morlock comes from H.G.

Wells's 1895 novel *The Time Machine*, where Morlocks are a brutish underground-dwelling race that preys on the gentle surface-dwelling Eloi.

The word now serves as an allusion to subterranean or troglodytic existence, or to people perceived as crude, predatory, or hostile to civilization: The basement IT department—we're the Morlocks down here.
