Montgomery boycott

Alabama transit strike

The Montgomery boycott was a 1955–1956 campaign by Black residents of Montgomery, Alabama, who refused to ride city buses to protest segregated seating.

Sparked by Rosa Parks's arrest for declining to give up her seat to a white passenger, the boycott lasted over a year and brought Martin Luther King Jr. to national prominence.

The Supreme Court ultimately ruled Montgomery's bus segregation unconstitutional.

The event became a landmark of the American civil rights movement.
