Maccabee

Ancient Hebrew fighter

A Maccabee was a member of the Jewish rebel army that recaptured Jerusalem from the Seleucid Empire in the second century BCE.

Their victory is commemorated by Hanukkah.

The name extends to the family that led the revolt, also called the Hasmoneans.

By extension, Maccabee suggests Jewish resistance or heroism: He fancied himself a modern Maccabee.
