MAOIs

Older depression medications

MAOIs, or monoamine oxidase inhibitors, are a class of antidepressant medications that work by blocking enzymes that break down mood-regulating brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.

Among the earliest antidepressants developed, they're now prescribed less frequently due to potentially dangerous interactions with certain foods and other drugs: The doctor warned him to avoid aged cheese while on MAOIs.
