jack o lantern
Carved pumpkin face
A jack o lantern is a pumpkin carved with a face and lit from within by a candle, traditionally displayed at Halloween.
The glowing, often ghoulish faces are meant to ward off evil spirits.
Before pumpkins became standard in America, turnips and other root vegetables served the purpose.
The term also names a phosphorescent light sometimes seen over swamps—will-o'-the-wisp.
Also spelled jack-o'-lantern.
