I beam

Flanged structural member

An I beam is a structural support beam with a cross-section shaped like the capital letter I—a vertical web connecting two horizontal flanges at top and bottom.

This shape provides excellent strength-to-weight ratio, making I beams fundamental to construction of buildings, bridges, and other large structures.

Also called an H beam when the flanges are wider.
