Hurricane Maria
2017 Puerto Rico disaster
Hurricane Maria was a Category 5 Atlantic hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands in September 2017.
The storm killed nearly 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, destroyed the island's power grid, and caused widespread destruction that took years to recover from.
Maria became a touchstone for debates about federal disaster response and Puerto Rico's political status: The island still hadn't fully recovered from Maria when the next hurricane season began.
