Human fertilization

Reproductive cell fusion

Human fertilization is the union of a sperm cell and an egg cell to form a zygote—the first cell of a new human organism.

This occurs in the fallopian tube when a single sperm penetrates the egg, merging their genetic material.

The fertilized egg then travels to the uterus, where it may implant and develop into an embryo.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) accomplishes this process outside the body.
