Hippolytus

Falsely accused stepson

Hippolytus is a figure from Greek mythology, son of Theseus and the Amazon Hippolyta.

He rejected the advances of his stepmother Phaedra, who then accused him of rape; Theseus cursed him, and Poseidon sent a sea monster that caused his horses to bolt, dragging him to death.

The story appears in Euripides' tragedy and Racine's *Phèdre*.

Separately, Saint Hippolytus was a third-century Christian theologian and antipope.
