Ginnungagap
Norse creation abyss
Ginnungagap is the primordial void in Norse mythology—the yawning emptiness that existed before creation.
According to the myths, fire and ice met in this abyss, and from their mingling came the first beings.
The word is occasionally borrowed into English for any vast, formless emptiness preceding existence: Before the Big Bang, there was something like Ginnungagap.
