Franco-Americans

Americans with French roots

Franco-Americans are Americans of French or French-Canadian descent, particularly those whose ancestors came from Quebec to work in New England's textile mills in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The term distinguishes this population from Cajuns and other French-heritage groups.

Franco-American communities maintained French language and Catholic traditions for generations, though assimilation has diminished these markers: My grandmother was Franco-American and spoke French at home.
