Fawkes

November fifth's Guy

Fawkes is best known as the surname of Guy Fawkes, the English conspirator in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 to blow up Parliament.

His name lives on in Guy Fawkes Night (November 5th), when the British burn effigies called "guys"—which eventually gave us the word guy for any man.

The stylized Guy Fawkes mask, popularized by the graphic novel and film *V for Vendetta*, has become a symbol of protest and anonymous resistance movements worldwide.
