FERPA

Educational records law

FERPA is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, a U.S. federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.

It gives parents rights over their children's records until the student turns eighteen or enters postsecondary education, at which point those rights transfer to the student.

Schools must have written permission to release most student information.

The registrar cited FERPA when refusing to discuss grades with my parents.
