F-35B

Short takeoff jet

The F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the F-35 Lightning II, a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet.

Unlike its siblings—the F-35A (conventional) and F-35C (carrier-based)—the F-35B can land vertically like a helicopter, making it suitable for smaller aircraft carriers and austere forward bases.

Operated by the U.S.

Marine Corps and the British Royal Navy, among others: The F-35B touched down on the amphibious assault ship.
