Eurobonds

EU collective borrowing

Eurobonds are debt securities issued in a currency different from that of the country or market where they are issued—for instance, a bond denominated in U.S. dollars but sold in London.

They emerged in the 1960s as a way for corporations and governments to raise capital internationally while avoiding domestic regulations.

The term can cause confusion because it also refers to proposed bonds that would be jointly guaranteed by eurozone member states, a controversial idea in European Union fiscal debates.

The company raised $500 million through a Eurobond offering.
