Emperor Napoleon
France's short dictator
Napoleon Bonaparte was Emperor of France from 1804 to 1814 and briefly in 1815, rising from Corsican military officer to ruler of much of Europe through conquest.
His name now evokes military genius, boundless ambition, and eventual overreach: He fancies himself a Napoleon.
The Napoleonic Code, his legal reform, still influences civil law worldwide.
