D string

Guitar's fourth wire

The D string is the string tuned to D on a stringed instrument.

On a violin or viola, it's the second-lowest string; on a guitar in standard tuning, it's the fourth string.

Musicians often specify strings by note name when discussing fingering, tone quality, or string changes: The passage sounds warmer on the D string.
