A string

Thread under tension

A string is a length of thin cord or twine, used for tying, binding, or threading: She tied the package with string.

String extends to anything similarly thin and elongated—a string of pearls, guitar strings, the fibrous strands in celery.

A string of events or items forms a connected sequence: a string of bad luck, a string of restaurants.

In computing, a string is a sequence of characters treated as a single unit of data.

To string something is to thread it or arrange it in a line: string lights on a tree, string beads on a wire.

With no strings attached, something comes without conditions or obligations.
