E string
Violin's thinnest wire
The E string is the highest-pitched string on a violin or the lowest on a guitar and bass.
String instruments are often tuned by reference to their strings: The orchestra tuned to the concertmaster's E string.
On violin, the E string produces the brightest tone; on guitar, both the thinnest and thickest strings are E, two octaves apart.
