soul selling

Trading eternal fate

Soul selling is making a deal with the devil—trading one's soul for earthly benefits like wealth, power, or talent.

The Faust legend is the classic example.

More broadly, it describes compromising one's values or integrity for gain: He sold his soul to get that promotion.

The phrase nearly always implies regret or moral judgment: She felt like she was selling her soul working for that company.
