Captain Flint

Captain Flint is the fearsome pirate captain in Robert Louis Stevenson's *Treasure Island*, dead before the novel begins but looming over it—his buried treasure drives the plot, and his former crew still speak of him with dread.

The name has become shorthand for a ruthless, legendary pirate.

Long John Silver's parrot also bears this name, squawking "Pieces of eight!"
