Cape Flats
Sandy South African
Cape Flats is a low-lying sandy plain east of Cape Town, South Africa, home to sprawling townships including Khayelitsha and Mitchell's Plain.
The area developed largely through apartheid-era forced removals, when non-white residents were relocated from central Cape Town.
Today it remains associated with poverty, gang violence, and overcrowding, though it's also a center of Cape Coloured culture and identity: She grew up on the Cape Flats.
