gumwood

Soft hardwood lumber

Gumwood is the timber of any of several gum trees, particularly the sweetgum and black gum of North America.

The wood is reddish-brown, moderately hard, and prone to warping, which limited its historical use to interior work, veneer, and furniture parts not requiring stability: The cabinet backs were made of gumwood.
