Book of Dead

Ancient funerary scrolls

The Book of Dead is an ancient Egyptian collection of funerary texts—spells, prayers, and instructions meant to guide the deceased through the underworld and into the afterlife.

Copies were placed in tombs, often on papyrus scrolls, to help the dead navigate dangers and pass divine judgment.

The name is a modern translation; Egyptians called it something closer to "Book of Coming Forth by Day."
