African penguin
South African seabird
African penguin is a species native to the southern coast of Africa, the only penguin that breeds on the continent.
Also called the jackass penguin for its braying call.
Once abundant, the species has declined sharply due to egg harvesting, oil spills, and declining fish stocks: African penguins are now endangered.
