2G
Pre-smartphone network standard
2G refers to second-generation wireless cellular technology, the first digital mobile networks that replaced analog systems in the 1990s.
It enabled text messaging and basic data transmission.
Now largely obsolete, 2G appears mainly in discussions of network coverage gaps or developing regions: Some rural areas still rely on 2G signals.
