zygotic induction
Lysogen triggers lysis
Zygotic induction is a phenomenon in bacterial genetics where a dormant viral genome (prophage) becomes activated when transferred from a lysogenic donor cell to a non-lysogenic recipient during conjugation.
The recipient cell lacks the repressor proteins that kept the virus dormant, triggering the viral DNA to replicate and destroy the host: Zygotic induction was key to understanding how prophages remain stable in their hosts.
