x-out

X-out refers to a golf ball with minor cosmetic imperfections—small blemishes, off-color spots, or printing errors—that manufacturers mark with X's over the brand name and sell at a discount.

These balls perform identically to their unmarked counterparts but don't meet appearance standards for full-price retail.

The term has expanded to describe any product sold cheaply due to superficial flaws.

I buy x-outs by the dozen since I lose so many balls anyway.
