wyrms

Legendary limbless dragons

Wyrms are serpentine dragons in fantasy literature and games—legless or nearly so, more snake than the winged, fire-breathing variety.

The word is an archaic or dialectal spelling of *worm*, which once meant serpent or dragon before narrowing to its modern sense.

Fantasy writers revived the old spelling to evoke medieval bestiaries: The wyrm coiled in its cavern, guarding ancient gold.
