hippogriffs

Eagle-fronted flying horses

A hippogriff is a mythical creature with the front half of an eagle—head, wings, and talons—and the hindquarters of a horse.

The beast appears in Renaissance Italian poetry and has been revived in modern fantasy literature and games: The knight mounted his hippogriff and took flight.

The name combines Greek words for horse and griffin.
