wrongfooting

Throwing someone off

Wrongfooting is catching someone off guard or putting them at a disadvantage, typically by doing something unexpected.

The term comes from sports, where forcing an opponent onto the wrong foot disrupts their balance: The sudden policy reversal wrongfooted the opposition.

To wrongfoot someone is to leave them unprepared to respond effectively.
