would rather

Given the choice

Would rather expresses preference—choosing one option over another: I would rather stay home than go out, Would you rather have coffee or tea?

The construction takes a bare infinitive: would rather go, not would rather to go.

With a different subject, it takes past tense: I'd rather you didn't mention it.

Often contracted to 'd rather.
